ELECTIONS
SET ON NOV. 14
The new set of directors of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. for
2005-2006 will be elected on November 14.
The elections will be held at the Knights of Columbus
Clubhouse after the mass at 3 p.m.
To be elected are twenty-five candidates who will be
nominated on October 10. Only
the top eleven will take the seats in the board.
Mr. Rogelio F. Fuentes who has decided to finally retire
after twenty-two years of serving as the association’s president
volunteers to be the chairman of the Committee on Elections.
The eleven directors-elect will meet together and will
appoint four representatives from the four different areas each
composed of four barangays outside the town proper of Bulusan.
These four representatives will complete the fifteen members of
the board of directors. Together
they will elect among themselves the president, 1st
vice-president, 2nd vice-president, secretary, and
treasurer. Other
officers are to be appointed by the president-elect with the
approval of the board. Also to be appointed are the four PROs from the four areas.
These areas are: Area I – Buhang, Bagacay, Sta. Barbara
and Porog; Area II – San Isidro,
Dancalan, San Jose, and San Francisco; Area III – San Roque,
Salvacion, San Bernardo, and San Rafael; and Area IV – San
Antonio, Lalud, Tinampo, and Cogon.
They will be inducted into office in a solemn ceremony
before the altar to be officiated by the priest who will celebrate
the mass on the second Sunday of January 2005.
Mr. Fuentes is confident that the directors and officers
who will be elected and appointed are those who have been
religiously serving the organization.
With them, Mr. Fuentes hopes they could carry on
effectively all the activities and projects initiated and
established by the DBI such as the monthly mass, yearly civic
action, Pista sa Maynila celebration, Damayan Christmas
Drive, and the biennial Damayan Homecoming.
MONTHLY
MASS ON 23RD YEAR
This coming August, the monthly mass of the Buluseños in
Metro-Manila will be on its 23rd year.
This monthly spiritual gathering in honor of Bulusan’s
patron saint, St. James the Greater, has become a part of the
lives of many Buluseños who make it a point to attend it
regularly. This is
where Buluseños from all walks of life converge just for the sake
of meeting and has thus been instrumental in bringing them closer
to one another – playing such a vital role in forming
Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. to what it is today.
It was in August 5, 1981, when Mrs. Nena Gonzales-Fabic
sponsored a mass in honor of St. James the Greater at the Holy
Trinity Church in Balic-Balic, Sampaloc, Manila.
The mass, which was attended by but a few Buluseños, was
celebrated by Rev. Fr. Tony Pura, then parish priest of Bulusan.
It was during their meeting after the mass at the residence
of Mrs. Fabic that the case of a young Buluseña who was then
detained at the Manila City Jail was discussed.
Upon the advice of Fr. Pura, the group paid her a visit
which led to the holding of a mass for three months at the
jail’s chapel.
When she was sentenced to life imprisonment and had to be
transferred to the Correctional Institute for Women, the group
moved to the Manila Cathedral on the second Sunday of November of
the same year and stayed there until December 1996.
At the cathedral, its staff could hardly believe that the
place would be filled with Buluseños every second Sunday at 2:00
P.M. knowing it is a time for siesta.
In the early part of the monthly gathering, it was
conceived as an extended parish of St. James the Greater in
Bulusan to make it a part of whatever project was to be undertaken
there.
But realizing that there were more pressing problems in the
community that had to be addressed, the group decided to form an
association. So, in
the early part of 1982, Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. was born, a
SEC-registered town organization.
After fifteen years at the Manila Cathedral , the group
moved again, this time to the nearby Knights of Columbus Clubhouse
where it is now since January 1997.
As to how long the monthly mass and Damayan-Buluseño, Inc.
will exist, only God knows. But
its organizers are confident that with the blessings of the
Almighty, it will go on and on to the next generations for the
sake of the various civic activities and humanitarian projects it
has initiated and established and which are now parts of the
legacy of the association to the town of Bulusan and the Buluseños.
TWO
SPONSORS RECEIVE AWARDS
As a token of appreciation and gratitude for having been
very supportive of the various projects of Damayan-Buluseño,
Inc., foremost of which being the Scholarship Program, two
Metro-Manila-based entrepreneurs were given a plaque of
recognition each during the association’s Pista sa Maynila celebration
last July 11 at the Knights of Columbus Clubhouse, Intramuros,
Manila.
The awardees were Ms. Ana Concepcion-Maglasang and Mr.
Alejo O. Dy. The
plaques were presented to them by their scholars assisted by DBI
president Rogelio F. Fuentes before a huge crowd of Buluseños who
attended the affair.
Before the awarding ceremonies, Mr. Fuentes enlightened his
townmates on the assistance extended by the two awardees to the
association.
According to Mr. Fuentes, Ms. Maglasang was the sponsor of
Cherry Fuasa of Barangay Central, Bulusan, who took up Nutrition
at the University of the Philippines.
For the past several years, she has consistently donated
several dozens of brand new dusters, shorts, and t-shirts to the
yearly Damayan Christmas Drive for distribution to poor Buluseños.
Mr. Dy sponsored Celeste Freo of Barangay Mabuhay who
graduated Cum Laude in Education from the Bicol University in
Legaspi City. He has also been supporting other projects of the DBI.
When he learned from Mr. Fuentes that Celeste was unable to
take the teachers’ examination due to late submission of
requirements, he offered her a job in his office in Parañaque.
Mr. Dy felt elated when Celeste graduated Cum Laude last
March. He told Mr.
Fuentes if only Legaspi was but a few hour-drive from
Metro-Manila, he would attend her graduation and congratulate her.
Touched
by the gesture of the DBI of awarding her a Plaque of Recognition
for what she has done, in response, Ms. Maglasang told the crowd
that she was so thankful and will always treasure the plaque given
her. She also
promised Mr. Fuentes that she will always be of help when needed
and if ever she has the means to do it.
Mr. Dy who was not around during the program due to an
earlier commitment, called up Mr. Fuentes the following day after
he received the plaque to express his thanks and appreciation for
it. He told Mr.
Fuentes, he was not expecting to receive such a wonderful
acknowledgment for the support he has extended to the association.
What touched and inspired both of them was the text in the
said plaque of recognition which states that it is awarded in
recognition of their wholehearted support to the various projects
of Damaya-Buluseño, Inc. foremost of which is its Scholarship
Program thereby giving a poor but talented Buluseño student the
rare opportunity to obtain college education and realize a
cherished hope for a bright future.
“Such benevolent act is very laudable and worth emulating
by others so that more professionals and future leaders could
emerge from the underprivileged sector of our society.”
As
of now, twenty-seven scholars of DBI have already graduated in
different courses in college.
Two more are expected to graduate soon.
ANDY
ESPEDIDO THANKS SUPPORTERS
Mr. ANDREW “ANDY” ESPEDIDO
wishes to express his gratitude to all those who supported and
voted for him in the last local elections.
Mr. Espedido, the secretary of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. ran
as Kagawad under the opposition camp but lost.
Despite his defeat though, he has no bitterness in him and
instead appreciate very much the kind gesture of those who gave
his trust in him.
In 2001, he ran for the same position and lost.
These two sad turnouts made him realize that politics is
not really meant for him. He now vows to stay away from it but
shall continue with his mission of supporting projects in the
community in the best way he could as long as they are for the
welfare of the people.
He also swears to fulfill his promise of sponsoring the
English & Filipino declamation contests among the Grades
III-VI pupils of the Sabang Elementary School in Bulusan.

SUPPORT
THE ADMINISTRATION, SAYS GEN. FORTUNO
Retired Maj. Gen. Cesar F. Fortuno appealed to his fellow
Buluseños and other Filipinos to support the administration of
those who won in the last presidential and local elections.
This was what he stated during the Pista sa Maynila celebration
of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. last July 11 at the Knights of Columbus
Clubhouse where he was one of the speakers.
A staunched ally of former President Joseph E. Estrada and
former NICA head, he supported movie actor Fernando Poe, Jr. in
the latter’s presidential bid in the last elections.
But now that the elections are over and the people have
decided, he calls on all our people to forget the bitterness of
the political contest and unite so we can move for the progress of
our country.
“As long as we are divided we will never prosper as a
nation so let us join together and work for the economic recovery
of our country. Let
us support the programs of the administration of President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo,” the mild-mannered retired general added.
Likewise, he also exhorted all the Buluseños particularly
those in the opposition camp to forget the bitterness in their
hearts caused by the last elections but instead extend their full
suport to the administration of reelected Mayor Juan G. Guysayko.
