EDITORIAL

It’s been quite a while since I wrote an article for this column.  Serving as the paper’s layout artist while doing the editing works certainly drain whatever ounce of energy is left of me when I get home from work, that is, after Inoy Elio hands me the manuscripts. I currently don’t have my personal computer with me that after working overtime at the office, I still have to go out and rent and do encoding jobs for the upcoming issue.  It’s only Sundays that I’m free and it’s the only time that I get to use my own computer (being safe kept at a relative’s house) either for website updates, or for layout/editing works for the Gazette.

At the moment, I’ve already printed out all twelve pages of this Gazette.  Thank God, it’s over and done with!  Earlier, I almost lost the entire layout I’ve been sweating with when the file I was working on suddenly seemed to have been corrupted.  Luckily, though, not much went astray – I was finally able to find my way out of the maze that I seemed to have created myself unintentionally.

                Having said that, this issue presents us with concerns relevant to our existence as Buluseños.  The association, or members of it, may express their observation on matters affecting the local community.  As much as we all want them to be, such may not always be on a positive note but always in a critical and democratic perspective – always leaving a room for the persons or entities concerned to have their side heard.

                Also in this issue, I’ve finally got the chance to publicly acknowledge the donations made to an organization back home.  To the donors who all wish to remain incognito, you know who you are, and we know how that self-same power sees what we do in secret – life is an echo: it gives back what we give, sometimes even more. 

                I guess this has been long enough to fill the space I’ve allotted to myself.  I hope you do enjoy reading through this issue.  Though some parts of it could inevitably hurt you, still there are positive notes not be ignored, for these small things, in the end, make Bulusan, our home, still a beautiful place in which to live. “An Legasiya ni Igsoon Martin”  

             BAGAMAN mamumduon an pamilya ni Igsoon Martin Halum dahil san pagkamatay niya, dako man na konsolasyon sa kanira na may magayon na legasiya siya na binilin sa mga dati niya kaupod sa bokasyon nan sa kapwa Bulusanon.

            Gustuhon ni Igsoon Martin na magpaadal pa konta sin mga matali na pobre na mga kabataan dahil gusto niya isabuhay an pilosopiya ni Confucius na “If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day.  But, if you teach him how to fish, he will eat for the rest of his life.”

            Sayang, binawian tulos siya sin buhay. Daghan pa konta an magiging propesyonal hali sa mga pobre na pamilya. Pero, nawara man siya, may binilin siya na panalmingan sa mga dati niya kaupod na nakasotana, nan sa mga kapwa Bulusanon lalo na sa mga may kaya sa buhay kon pan-o magmakulog sa kapwa lalo na sa mga nagtiti-os na pamilya.  Magayunon na legasiya an binilin ni Igsoon Martin.

            SALA an mga nagsasabi na negatibo sa administrasyon an Damayan-Buluseño lalo na ako dahil san mga insusurat ko dini sa Gazette. Positibo permi an Damayan-Buluseño lalo na ako sa administrasyon san sin-o man na nakapuesto basta para sa kaayadan san komunidad.

OF ETERNITY AND ETERNAL FORCES

            While in the grade school, I learned that “eternity” or  “eternal” means no beginning and no end. At my young age, I could hardly comprehend its meaning, but I kept thinking about it as I journey through life.

            And then, in the high school literature subject, we were introduced to a poem, “Invictus” which mentioned something about infinity and eternity: “Hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.”  I said to myself, “Wow, what deep secrets does this passage hold?”

            As years go by, I try to read as much as I could and ponder about things I read. I became interested in spiritual matters, about a person’s true identity, about God, about relationships with fellow beings, with the Supreme Soul and with nature.

            One day at about the turn of the millennium, I learned about the free lecture on Raja Yoga Meditation. I attended it and got hooked to the new knowledge I was introduced to. I enrolled for more free lessons and am still at it. I found answers to such questions of who and what am I? Where have I come from? Where am I going? Who is God? What are my relationships with Him and with nature? Etc. (These topics were discussed in previous issues of the Gazette.)

            I learned further that eternity is a cycle and time itself is the moving image of eternity. It can be represented by a circle where every point in a circle could be the beginning and at the same time an end.

We witness cyclical movements daily in our life: Day starts with dawn, becoming noontime, dusk and then evening and then back to dawn again; the days of the week, the months and seasons of the year, the motion of the planets around the sun making one year, the phases of the moon, the cycles of water and carbon, etc. -  all moving in a cyclical pattern. When the end meets the beginning, the cycle starts all over again, ad infinitum. We often hear about history repeating itself.

Cyclic time implies that God neither creates souls nor nature or matter. These three  (God, souls and matter) are distinct and eternal operative realities or forces, each having its own powers and functions.  The interplay of these three forces produces the scenes of creation or phenomena resulting in the so-called history and geography of the world.

            There are certain immutable laws that govern the interplay of the soul, God and nature. The laws of nature automatically take care of the details of nature while the law of cause and effect (Karma or Action) takes care of the details of human life.

The laws of nature are not the laws of God. God teaches us His laws. We learn them but forget them. God, being the Ocean of Knowledge, knows all the laws and never forgets them. He is the only one who upholds those laws perfectly and for all eternity. Herein lies His greatness not in the ability to interfere with events when He chooses. He does not grant favor to some and then favor others. Nor does He remove sin unless the devotee himself begins to make the necessary efforts. God is immune to both flattery and defamation. He is complete by Himself.

Knowledge of the Laws of Thermodynamics and the Law of Karma will make us understand the reason for the events taking place all over the world. Why are there so much chaos, confusion and violence? Damayan-Buluseno Gazette

This refers to the positive comment made by Rev. (Maj.) Salvador G. Gacias on the Catholic Church's stand against Freemasonry that was written in the September-October 2003 issue of the Damyan Buluseno Gazette.

His comments may, however, be likened to the description of St. John the Baptist as that of "a voice crying in the wilderness." In this predominantly Catholic country, the Freemasons are still regarded as those who allegedly worship the devil called Baphomet, spit on the cross and deny Christ, and such absurd charges that can be leveled against members of the Masonic Fraternity. St. John the Baptist, incidentally, is one of the two patrons of Masonry, the other being St. John the Evangelist.

These absurd charges notwithstanding, Freemasons do subscribe to the dictum that it is in his work that the true worth of a man is judge; and the legacies left behind by Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Manuel L. Quezon, Rafael Palma and currently Justice Reynato S. Puno and Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr. to name a but few, can stand critical evaluation.

In this far-off scenic island called Bohol, I, too, stand on my firm conviction that a mass that will be officiated by a Catholic priest would be totally irrelevant when I am finally called by my Maker. The good that I did, and even the bad, can no longer be altered by a Catholic Mass, the rank of the officiating priest notwithstanding.
