PRESIDENT'S CORNER

by: Engr. Pablito R. Freo

Last February, I assumed  the presidency of this organization after Madam Luz Z. Gamba resigned from her post due to personal reasons.  Personally though, I was already quite contented doing my job as one of its vice-presidents, and holding this highest post was anywhere but near my line of thinking.  I definitely have not ambitioned to be in this topmost rank but now being faced with a president-less organization and being the next-in- line, I had to make a decision, one which proved to be quite a grueling process.

For almost a month, I had several serious thoughts coupled with prayers questioning myself and my ability to handle the position.  I consulted with my family as I know they shall be the ones foremost affected by my decision.  I was caught in a dilemma on whether to ACCEPT or NOT the post and the responsibility that comes with it.  Out there, I know many other Buluseños are just more than capable of handling the post.

But because it was I who was next to the vacated post, I decided to break my silence.  I appeared to fellow officers and a devoted Buluseño crowd armed with my FINAL DECISION backed up with a PRAYER that my KABABAYANS will support me now that I have decided to accept the post.  The crowd’s overwhelming acceptance thenafter was enough for me (I know others still may have their own choices), but I formally accepted on the condition that my holding this post as president would only be until the end of the term of office of the other incumbent officers.

During the meeting of the Board of Directors, it was agreed that the term of office of the incumbent officers be extended until December 2007.

In the Pista sa Maynila celebration last July 9, 2006 – the new set of officers was formally inducted by our guest of honor & speaker TV host personality Mr. Arnold “Igan” Clavio.

SA NGARAN SAN DAMAYAN

ni Rogelio "Elio" Fuentes

“Wara Mapabakal Kon Wara Mabakal”

Basta pirmahan nira an kanira surat para ma-publish man dini sa Gazette nan mabasa san publiko.

Sunod-sunod man an bagyo, baha, nan linog. Nalimutan na nira na sugad man sini an mga pangyayari san panahon mientras napalayas an diktador.

Mientras may pinapatay, lalo nadagdagan an mga rebelde.

Nawara na man an kanira ideyalismo.

Kaya, sa ngaran san ato Mahal na Patron Señor Santiago nan san mga nagmamakulog na Bulusanon, nakihuron ako nan nakimaluoy sa mga pulitiko, mga lider nan pamilya nira na kon eleksyon halion ngon-a nira an amor propio para hamok gumana an kanira kandidato. Paaguihon na sa honesto nan legal an eleksyon para kon gumana man mas hataas an dignidad na makaatubang sira sa mga tawo.  Diri pa makulog an buot san mapierde.

Dapat, isipon ta na WARA MAPABAKAL KON WARA MAN MABAKAL SIN BOTO.

Hinuhulit ko an kasabihan na “Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.”

Sinasalvage man sira na an suspect mga military

Kaya lalo lugod nadagdagan an gusto na magrebelde

Kay inuumaw pa an berdugo na opisyal san military

Sugad na sin senyales na an pagpatay kaniya isigue

Guiyahan sira sa liwanag, DIYOS KO KALUOYI KAMI!

Kaya makaluluoy lugod niyan an buhay san mga pobre

Kon diri makapang-hold up talagang napaka-miserable

THE PHILOSOPHY OF KARMA

There is a certain law which is intrinsic to action and interaction. It is not  man-made requiring lawyers to interpret and police to enforce. It is a natural law, which is constantly operating in every relationship. It is often called Law of Karma; acknowledged in the Christian saying “as you sow so shall you reap”; described by Isaac Newton in the Law of Motion, where “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.

Karma is derived from the Sanskrit word which is “to do” or “to act”. It simply states that we get back from life what we put into it. If you give happiness to someone else, it will come back to you, if you give pain or sorrow, it will come back to you.   We can say that karma means the fruit of our good or bad actions.

The beauty of the law of karma is understanding that:  IF YOUR ACTIONS BRING HAPPINESS AND SPIRITUAL UPLIFTMENT TO OTHERS TODAY, TOMORROW WILL BE BRIGHT and YOUR OWN DESTINY IS FIRMLY IN YOUR OWN HANDS.

The world is tied by karma and no one can live without it. Starting from birth till one’s death, karma continues affecting each and every activity of human life. Happiness and sorrow during the span of life is determined by one’s karma.

And the law is absolute. It can not be adjusted or manipulated. It operates whether one believes in it or not; but we will not know quite when we will get it. The seeds of certain actions bring instantaneous results. Others can take years or even lifetimes to come to fruit. We will not always know when we will receive the dividends or when we have to “pay up front”.

Before every action is performed, there is first a thought whether it is positive or negative. It is impossible to perform an action without a thought. Thoughts are seeds sown in every action. The fruit of these seeds (thoughts) may result in suffering or pleasure. Our joys and our grief; our tears and our laughter; our fame and our defamation all constitute karma philosophy. Re:

Thanks, I finally got time to make this reaction to Inoy Elio’s letter.

This is my first time to contribute to the e-group as like many others who are living within or near Bulusan, I  used to receive copies of the very substantial Gazette of Damayan Buluseño, Inc. or Damayan.

When I learned about Inoy Elio’s retirement as President of Damayan, whom he untiringly and superbly served for 22 years since its birth, and for standing firm to his principles amid threats to his life, I felt the need to thank him and commend his exemplary accomplishments. Thus, I sent a tribute for him for publication in the Gazette. Unfortunately, no more Gazette has ever been published for reason/s I and many Buluseños do not know. Good for those who have the luxury of time, or resources to be kept abreast of the current issues and developments  in Bulusan through this e-group. But I am more concerned on the local residents who can’t be reached by the internet but must be awakened on what is really happening and stir their hearts and minds to participate in changing for the better. The stoppage of the Gazette’s publication is not a welcome development because it links Buluseños from different places in the country and even those abroad. Knowing the real situation of their hometown, kindhearted Buluseños have helped and are willing to help to improve the town’s economic and political conditions. Likewise,  local residents who seem helpless and hopeless but are able to read some new and good developments about the town in the Gazette, at least, are able to see hopes.

I was moved by Inoy Elio’s letter, thus I write this. I actually find his letter full of emotions which I understand because he has truly served and has offered his life in the name of love for Bulusan and his town mates.

I am also so concerned on the issues confronting Bulusan which have been ventilated through the Gazette, e-group and from the mouths of the residents themselves because I love my hometown also and I want to see it peaceful and progressive. Love of service was the driving force for me to get actively involved in Damayan in the 80’s. I was a part of its various civic and religious activities benefiting many Buluseños. It was through Damayan where my civic responsibility was awakened with the strong and exemplary leadership of Inoy Elio. I was deeply involved in Damayan’s Metro Manila-based Youth Chapter and was among those mainly tasked to organize the youths in each of the 24 barangays of Bulusan to form the Local Youth Chapter. Due to my deep involvement in the organization, I have seen how Inoy Elio has worked so hard to ensure the attainment of Damayan’s vision and mission. I have not seen any leader as dedicated and determined as him and who is ready to die for his cause and principles with a sincere aim of helping his fellow Buluseños.

I have heard some comments long before and even during last year’s election that Inoy Elio has been working under the guise of serving Buluseños through Damayan because of his political agenda. How unfair these remarks were! Instead of appreciating and thanking him for his wholehearted and free services, adverse comments were heard. If these are hurting to Inoy Elio and his loved ones, the same is true to us who have also given our hearts to Damayan. How callous of some, who, instead of cooperating and supporting the activities of Damayan for the common good, find time to attack its leader and even its activities! Much have been seen, said and written about Damayan’s accomplishments, and all these would not have been possible without Inoy Elio’s distinct leadership. This man is certainly civic-minded. He is GOD-fearing. He is pro-poor. He loves to help. He loves to serve. But most of all, he is a PRINCIPLED MAN. He is not cowed by anybody or anything, and is ready to die in fighting for his cause.

Damayan has been so much a part of Bulusan and many Buluseños elsewhere. Inoy Elio has been  undoubtedly equated with Damayan, because what Damayan has done for more than two decades can be mainly attributed to his dynamism, dedication and determination. He portrays to be the head of Bulusan who, in real sense, has the genuine concern for the welfare of its people. He is not afraid to die if only to defend his town from the evil works which he has boldly exposed. Inoy Elio is a man of vision and principles who, in his capacity as a native of Bulusan, has gone his way out to generously share his time, efforts and resources for his town mates. With these, I think Inoy Elio deserves to be called FATHER OF BULUSAN.

To you, Inoy Elio, I salute you for your extreme courage to voice out boldly the evils hounding Bulusan which for many, make it apparently stagnant. You may be so unpopular to a few who may be hurt by your persistent write-ups, but we know that majority out there who love peace and democracy are silently wishing that your efforts would not be in vain. Others may have the same burning love and concern, but they could not match your heroism. The way you have manifested your ardent love for your hometown and town mates is incomparable. I just hope and pray that others, especially our concerned local officials mandated to serve their constituents who have not been convinced by your bright ideas, may be touched by the LORD. Fr. Benedicto “Benny” Furo of Bgy Madlawon once said, “We just need a heart to love our country.” It is just like saying, “We just need a heart to love our very own Bulusan.”

With the onset of the Advent Season, I think it is high time to reflect and reexamine ourselves. Bringing significant changes in the community begins with a significant change in every heart of an individual. Let us start anew. Let us repent and plant the seed of GOD’s love in our hearts, nourish it and let it radiate. Let us learn to see the good in others. Instead of expecting too much, let us do our own share, in our own little ways and influence others in doing good. Sooner or later, GOD will show us how an economically poor and politically eroded community is transformed into one wherein people will be living in peace and progress.

Let me end this with a quote which says, “The two greatest virtues are also the greatest vices -- wealth and power. Wealth sanctifies if shared and depraves if ill-gotten. Power emancipates if used for common good and  enslaves if used for self gain. They spell true success in life and destiny after life. They are the Lord’s tools for salvation and damnation.”

May Love and Peace reign in our hearts. GOD bless us always.
