Senior Citizens’ Day Celebrated

The Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines - Bulusan Chapter celebrated Senior Citizens’ Day last October 25, 2003.  The affair was actually the culminating activity of the Senior Citizens’ Week which was observed from the 19th to the 25th of the same month.

The day’s activities started off with a Thanksgiving Mass at 7 A.M. at the town’s parish church.  In his homily, Rev. Fr. Roberto T. Traballo expressed delight on the growing number of elderly church-goers – a great manifestation of their unity.  In conclusion, he said that he would be glad to register as one of them.

A civic parade around the poblacion followed after which cultural presentations were held at the Bulusan Cultural & Sports Center for the rest of the day.

The invocation was led by Mr. Reynaldo D. Din while Mrs. Virginia G. Fulleros conducted for the singing of the National Anthem.  Mr. Jaime M. Espedido, vice-president of the association, gave the words of welcome.

This year’s theme was “Bulusan: Destinasyon Nin Mga Turista.  Nano an ikakadanon ko?”  The float for the five virtues was painted along with Bulusan’s different tourist destinations.  The program numbers, on the other hand, showed “Bulusan – Then & Now”.

Ethnic dances, harana, kundiman, and a parade of folkdances were rendered in the morning.  PSI Eduardo M. Amande, Jr. (OIC, Bulusan Station Police Office), gave his very inspiring observations and remarks; while Vice-Mayor Nelly G. Fortades delivered the inspirational talk in behalf of the Mayor, stating among others the construction soon of a Senior Citizens Building.

After lunch (KKB for members), presentations depicting “Bulusan Then” were performed including scenes from Agingay to Ribongcena, a Muslim suite, and Ilog Bulusan.  Councilor Eugenio R. Regalario, Chairman for OSCA (Office of Senior Citizens Affairs) gave his remarks, announcing his all-out support to the organization. “Bulusan Now” was presented in the form of Sex Bomb dancers from the Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Sabang Elementary School, and Bulusan Central School.  Modern dances were shared by students from Jose S. Reyes Memorial Institute, Bulusan High School, and Bulusan National Vocational & Technical School.  Mr. Juan G. Galindes, president of the organization, gave his words of thanks.

The last group of numbers were surprise ones from the barangays, and the ballroom dancing which was a contest. (JGG)
