SCHOLARS TO GRADUATE IN MARCH

Three scholars of the Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. through its Scholarship Through Sponsorship Program will graduate this coming March from different schools with different college degrees.  They are Cesar L. Gacosta, Lea Balderama, and Salvacion Gardon.

Cesar will graduate in Computer Science from the AMA Computer College in Legaspi City.  A son of Celso and Elisa Gacosta of Barangay Sapngan, his scholarship is sponsored by Mr. Reynaldo Labrador of Manila.

Lea took up Architectural Drafting at the Sorsogon State College.  She is the third scholar of the late Mayor Bernardo R. Sayarot of Mabitac, Laguna who was killed in an ambush in Teresa, Rizal together with the late Gabriel “Amby” Fuentes on October 29, 2001 when Lea was on the third year of her course. However, her scholarship was pushed through by Mr. Joel G. Fulleros, a former DBI scholar and formerly an employee of the late Mayor Sayarot.

Lea’s parents are Fernando and Paz Balderama of Barangay San Bernardo.  She is now on an “On-The-Job Training” as draftsman at the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bulusan.  DBI expects she would get the item the moment she passes the Civil Service examination.

Salvacion will be graduating with an Elementary Education degree from the Bicol University in Daraga, Albay.  Sponsored by a Buluseño based abroad who chose to remain incognito, Salvacion is from Barangay Poctol.

With the graduation of these three scholars, the DBI scholarship program would have a total of twenty-four college graduates who all came from poor families but bright  and talented.

Next year, three more scholars are expected to graduate.

SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS NEEDED

Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. through its Scholarship Through Sponsorship Program is appealing to all civic-minded Buluseños to share their blessings by way of sponsoring the college education of bright and talented high school graduates who belong to poor Buluseño families.  This way, they will greatly help in moulding our youths into responsible professionals who may become future leaders in the community.

A number of high school students who will be graduating with honors this coming March have approached Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. for possible college scholarship grants.  But, due to lack of sponsors, the association could not assure them yet of any slot this school year.

Through this appeal, DBI hopes to receive responses from Buluseños who are concerned for the future of these youths.

The Scholarship Through Sponsorship Program of DBI was conceived in 1983 and as of now twenty-one scholars have already graduated from college and another three will graduate this March.  Four are still in college.  If they all graduate by year 2006, there will be 28 graduates through this program.

Actually, they are supposed to be thirty-two, but for unknown reasons four of them did not pursue with their studies after a year in school without even informing the association.

In this program, DBI does not spend a single centavo for the scholars.  The association’s role is to scout for possible sponsors.

Of these twenty-eight scholars, eleven of their sponsors are Buluseños.  They are former Assemblyman Augusto G. Ortiz, retired Maj. Gen. Cesar F. Fortuno, former scholars Edwin Gonzales and his wife Loida Gayta – Gonzales, Joel G. Fulleros, and Jesus Perez and anonymous Buluseños based in Metro-Manila and abroad.

To qualify as scholar, an applicant must be the poorest among the top five graduates from the four high schools in Bulusan namely: Jose S. Reyes Memorial Institute, Bulusan National High School, Buhang National High School, and San Roque National High School.

Those who wish to sponsor a scholar, may get in touch with Mr. Juan G. Galindes, Chairman of the Local Coordinating Board in Bulusan, or DBI President Rogelio F. Fuentes at 86 Premium Street, GSIS Village, Quezon City.  Tel. No. 929-5277.
