EX-SEC ROCO IS FIESTA GUEST

Former Senator and Ex-Secretary of Education Raul S. Roco will be the Guest of Honor and Speaker in the annual “Pista sa Maynila” celebration of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. on July 13 at the Knights of Columbus Clubhouse.

This will be the first time for the association to invite as guest speaker a former senator and cabinet member.  Mr. Roco was the unanimous choice of the officers and members, he, being the most popular Bicolano in the country today.

With his presence a big throng of Buluseños from Metro Manila and elsewhere is expected to attend the celebration to meet him in person and hear him on his plans for the country in connection with his intention to run for presidency next year.

Also invited are Bulusan Municipal Mayor Juan G. Guysayko and other municipal officials.

DBI TO AWARD SPONSORS

As a token of appreciation and recognition of their concern for the future and welfare of poor Buluseño youths, the sponsors of the four scholars who have just graduated from college this year will be the major awardees during the Pista sa Maynila celebration of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. on July 13, 2003 at the Knights of Columbus Clubhouse.

Among the recipients of the award is the family of the late Mayor Bernardo R. Sayarot of Mabitac, Laguna, who was killed in an ambush along the highway in Teresa, Rizal, more than a year ago.  Mayor Sayarot was the sponsor of Lea Balderama of Barangay San Bernardo who graduated with the degree in Architectural Drafting from the Sorsogon State College.

Mayor Sayarot was also the sponsor of Evelyn Diño, a graduate in education from the Philippine Normal University in Manila and now teaching in Texas, USA.  He also sponsored Luzviminda Fragio-Ballesteros who is now a public school teacher in Bulusan.

Aside from being a scholarship sponsor, the late Mayor Sayarot had been very supportive of the various civic and humanitarian projects of Damayan-Buluseño, Inc. and had employed a number of Buluseños in his business establishments.

To be awarded also is La Tondeña Foundation, Inc. which sponsored the scholarship of Marlon Rabulan who took up Electrical Engineering at the Technological University of the Philippines.  His scholarship was made possible by Maj. General Cesar F. Fortuno who was then a top executive of La Tondeña Distellers, Inc.

Another awardee is Mr. Reynaldo Labrador.  He sponsored the scholarship of Cesar L Gacosta who finished Computer Science at the AMA Computer College in Legaspi City.

The fourth awardee is the anonymous sponsor of Salvacion Gardon who is now a graduate in Elementary Education from the Bicol University in Legaspi City.  The sponsor who remains incognito for the past four years has decided to come out in the open during the program, receive the award and extend his personal felicitations to Salvacion for successfully finishing her course.

ANOTHER SCHOLAR GRADUATES

Another scholar, Marlon A. Rabulan, graduated this year from Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) with an Electrical Engineering degree.

Marlon’s scholarship was sponsored by La Tondeña Foundation, Inc. which was made possible by retired Maj. Gen. Cesar F. Fortuno who was then a top executive of the said company.

A valedictorian when he graduated in 1998 at the Bulusan National Vocational and Technical School, Marlon is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Santiago Rabulan of Barangay Madlawon.

BULUSEÑA PLACES 7TH IN GEODETIC ENG'G BOARD EXAMS

Edelyn G. Fortes, the fifth child of Ruben Fortes of Barangays San Isidro and Looban, and the late Salvacion Guevarra of Barangay San Roque – ranked 7th among the 76 out of 187 examinees who took and successfully passed the Board Examinations for Geodetic Engineers last January 16, 2003 in Manila.  It was indeed a close fight that with a general rating of 85.40, Edelyn was just 1.40 points behind the 1st placer.

A consistent achiever since her elementary days at the Bulusan Central School where she graduated with the top honors in 1991, Edelyn has been bringing home honors not only for herself but also for her family, friends, school, and to her hometown.  She continued her winning streak at the Ramon Magsaysay High School – Cubao where she eventually graduated Valedictorian in 1995, and at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City where she finished her undergraduate studies.  (BCS Classmate 1991)

BULUSAN HAS NEW LADY LAWYER

After thirteen years, Bulusan has produced a second lady lawyer, Marissa Españo-Magpusao, the twenty-seven year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Galicano F. Españo of Barangay San Isidro, Bulusan.

The first was Atty. Genie Gapas-Agbada, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Geronimo Gapas of Barangay Sabang.  She became a lawyer in 1990 and is now a Solicitor III at the Office of the Solicitor General.  Having been with the OSG for more than ten years, she is now ripe to become a judge, a position she expects to be given her by the appointing lawyer.

Marissa or Atty. Magpusao is now the Legislative Staff Officer at the office of Quezon City Councilor Cyrus Lanot.

To become a certified public accountant (CPA) was her first dream.  But her father wanted her to become a lawyer.  To please him, she enrolled in Political Science at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City where she graduated in 1997.

She quit for a year when she got married to Engr. Michael Magpusao after her graduation.  The following year, she took up law at the San Sebastian College and graduated in year 2002.  Before the end of the same year, she took up the bar examinations the result of which was released last February where her name was among the successful examinees.

Isang as she is fondly called by her family and friends, was an active youth leader during her student days.  In fact, she was elected to the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in 1992 at Barangay South Triangle, Quezon City.  In 1996, she became the SK Chairman when Mr. Lanot was elected Barangay Captain of the same area.  When Captain Lanot was elected president of the League of Barangay Captains of Quezon City and eventually became a City Councilor, he took with him Atty. Magpusao to his office at the City Hall.

Now that her father’s dream for her has been realized, she intends to work in another government agency where she can get a permanent position.  That way, she can pursue her course in accountancy and fulfill her own dream of becoming a CPA.

In a few more years, God willing, she will be the first Buluseña CPA-lawyer.
